By growing vertically on a trellis, you can add cucumbers just about anywhere, including containers. When growing cucumbers on a trellis, space plants about 12 inches apart along the base of the support structure. And keep in mind there are both vining and bush-type cucumbers.

The general recommendation is to run a trellis North-South so that both sides get equal sunshine without a side (such as the North side in a East-West trellis) being shaded out during the day.

Plant cucumbers when average daily temperatures reach the mid-70s° F. Space cucumbers 36 to 60 inches apart (12 inches apart for trellised plants) in an area with abundant sun and fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.8.

Trellised cucumbers are easier to pick and less susceptible to disease. Cucumbers do best if they can climb instead of spread over the ground. The tendrils of the vines will grab fences, string, wire trellis, or tall cages so that the vines climb the structures.

Simply stick the trellis in the dirt at the end of the garden at a 45-degree angle. 2. Training the vines to crawl up the trellis takes a bit of patience and a little engineering. Once the vine runners are long enough to reach the trellis, loosely wrap each runner with plastic garden tape.

With outdoor cucumbers, pinch out the growing tip once plants have developed seven leaves, to encourage side-shoots. Also pinch out the tips of flowerless side-shoots after seven leaves.

Planting the radicle downward provides the most direct growth path for the root. However, planting the seed lying flat is also a good option. The radicle can still easily sense the downward direction in this position and emerge properly.

If possible, orient your arch so the opening faces north/south. This provides maximum sunlight exposure to both sides of the trellis.

To maximize sunlight, position trellises on the north edge of your garden bed or next to a fence or wall. Alternatively, shade sun-sensitive plants in hotter regions by having the trellises on the south side, filtering the sunlight for plants that need relief from the summer sun.

Position your trellis right behind the base of your plants so that as they grow, they can cling to the structure above and continue climbing upward. Some plants are naturally good at climbing, but some may need a bit of help.
