There’s no doubt about it, Dragon Ball XenoVerse 2 is an improvement on its predecessor, but occasionally even the best of games can become stale, or lacking its original spark. After just a couple of months I’d strayed away from the action, and now I’m looking for a way back in. Maybe a spot of new content will do the trick? Step forward the DB Super Pack 1 downloadable content; can it deliver value for money and a decent amount of fresh content to those who have previously exhausted everything Dragon Ball XenoVerse 2 has to offer?
This DLC pack focuses on adding Dragon Ball Super based items, characters and related quests to proceedings. DB Super is the latest and most recent manga and anime series, seen as a sequel to the ever popular Dragon Ball Z. I guess it’s best to start with the newly playable characters.
There are just the two characters receiving a place on the XenoVerse 2 playable roster, and both are members of Team Universe 6. Cabba is what you’d describe as your average looking Saiyan, with spiky black hair and wearing a blue suit under a plate of armour. Frost on the other hand is a member of Frieza’s race, and unsurprisingly in his final form, resembles both Cooler and Frieza combined. The designs are spot on; however, visual greatness won’t win any battles. As for their movesets, some of the standouts are Secret Poison – even if it seems a little weak for an Ultimate Attack – and Impulse Slash, the latter of which does an absolute ton of damage. I don’t particularly care for all the moves they perform, but each of the characters are decent enough for usage in Battles and quests, should you have grown bored of those already in the game.
If you’re hoping to teach your created character a handful of new moves then you’ll be glad to know there’s another mentor thrown into the mix to learn from. The legendary assassin Hit is on hand to put you through your paces, with moves such as Time Skip/Flash Skewer available to obtain. What’s disappointing is it appears that you need to be at the MAX Super training level to partake in these lessons; hence not everyone will be able to train with Hit without some hard work first. He won’t give you the time of day otherwise.
All the things I’ve already mentioned are by no means bad, but there’s no real substance to any of it so far. The Parallel Quests are the main course of this DLC, three new ones to be exact, centred on Universe 6 & 7. All three will test you to your limits, even with a few online partners, as I came close to running out of time on each attempt. I wouldn’t bother trying it with A.I. help, that’s just madness. My personal favourite was PQ 102 ‘Universe 6 in a Fix’, not just because you fight alongside Frost and Cabba against Golden Frieza and a villainous Broly, but mostly due to the post-fight encore (when certain conditions are met) versus Omega Shenron and Super 17 – hard as nails they are.
Items can be earned from the PQs, so if you’re after Cabba’s Battle Suit, Champa’s Clothes, or one of the five new Super Souls, then you’re in luck. They’re pretty cool, but not worth fretting over.
The DB Super Pack 1 provides a few reasons to jump back into the XenoVerse 2 world, the biggest of which is to attempt the fresh Parallel Quests. Cabba and Frost look the part, however I can’t see me using either of them over my created character, or instead of some of the base game characters. Putting Hit in as a mentor would’ve been far more appreciated if he wasn’t standoffish to those who haven’t yet been able to reach the training heights needed.
For £6.39 you could do a lot worse than pick up the DB Super Pack 1, but there’s not an awful lot of longevity in it if truth be told. Grab it if you have literally done everything else in the game, otherwise I’d see how the next DLC fares, before considering the more frugal choice of the Dragon Ball XenoVerse 2 Season Pass.
