How To Make Homemade Pancakes

First, pour all the dry ingredients into the bowl. That includes about 1 1/2 cups of flour, 2 tsp of sugar, a pinch of salt, and 2 teaspoons of baking powder.

Mix the dry ingredients together with a whisk or a fork until they are well blended. If you would like, you could put this mix into a sealed jar or container to have as a homemade pancake mix. But if you’re ready to make pancakes now, just scroll to the next step for the refrigerated ingredients you’ll need to add.

Next, beat the egg in a small bowl just a bit with a fork so that the yolk and egg whites are well mixed. It makes the pancakes a bit fluffier when you do this first by incorporating a little air into the whisked egg. Plus it makes it easier to properly blend the egg well with the dry ingredients.

Then add the wet ingredients to the bowl of flour: about 1 cup of milk and a whisked egg. TIP: I keep an extra half cup of milk on hand to add in a bit more in case the batter is too thick. Measuring flour can sometimes be tricking when using cups instead of weight. So just in case you added a heaping cup of flour in the steps above, it is good to have some extra milk on hand in case you need to thin the batter.

Homemade Pancake Toppings

Now, as for toppings, there are so many variations. You could top with fresh blueberries, like we have here. Or raspberries, figs, sliced bananas. Nuts are also a great topping, especially walnuts or pecans. My husband loves to put peanut butter on his pancakes! I like to have a side of maple syrup to dip each bite into.

Making Different Flavors Of Homemade Pancakes

Now, when it comes to cooking fruit in with your pancakes, it could change up how long it takes them to cook. For blueberries, I recommend using frozen so they don’t burst and create a sugary sticky mess on your pan. Sliced bananas cooked in with the batter are so sweet and tasty. And thinly sliced apples are a great way to make apple pancakes in the fall. No matter how many creative variations you try, refer back to this homemade pancake recipe as the base.

How to make the first pancake good? ›

Let the batter rest for a few minutes.

Stir the batter occasionally to eliminate air bubbles. While you're letting the batter rest, you can begin preparing your cooking surface. Resting the batter gives the starches time to relax after whisking them together so that the pancake will turn out light and fluffy.

What are original pancake house pancakes made of? ›

Of course, we only use real eggs and separate the whites from the yolks to order. Our buttermilk pancakes are low fat. We make them from scratch using a low fat powdered buttermilk, and a low fat powdered skim milk. We also only use hardwheat unbleached flour.

How do we prepare pancakes? ›

Just flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, an egg, a little butter, and milk. Like a muffin batter, just two bowls are needed. One for the dry ingredients, and one for the wet ingredients. Then the two are simply stirred together and the pancake batter is ready to be ladled onto a hot skillet.

What is pancake mix made of? ›

Combine flour, powdered milk, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl; stir to blend. Store mixture in an airtight container and use within 8 months.

What makes pancakes fluffy and rise? ›

Pancakes and waffles typically both contain baking soda, which causes them to rise. As soon as the baking soda is combined with the wet ingredients (which contain an acidic ingredient, like often buttermilk), it starts producing carbon dioxide gas bubbles that cause the batter to rise.

Should I use milk instead of water for pancakes? ›

1. Use Milk/ Alternative Milk Instead Of Water. Even though the mix may call for water, you can easily substitute that for an alternative milk (I like oat milk). You may have to add a dash more due to the difference in consistency, but it'll taste so much better!

Should you let pancake batter rest in the fridge? ›

A – If you are going to let your batter rest, leave it for at least 30 minutes in the fridge. If you've got time, leave it for longer – even overnight in the fridge. Some say that there is no point in letting the batter rest and there's certainly no harm in using it straight away. Go ahead if you're in a rush.

Do you cook pancakes on high or low heat? ›

The ideal temperature for cooking pancakes

Either way, it's obvious that delicious pancakes require an ideal griddle temperature (and a little bit of patience) to get that nice, fluffy texture. Simply put: the best temperature for cooking pancakes is 375°F on a griddle or medium to medium high heat on the stove.

What to add to pancake mix? ›

Imagine combining lemon zest and blueberries to the cottage cheese pancakes. Or add espresso powder to the chocolate chip pancakes to create mocha latte pancakes (topped with whipped cream, of course). Experiment with chia seeds, molasses, raspberries, dried cranberries, or even pineapple.

Should I use milk or water for pancakes? ›

Can I Use Water Instead of Milk in Pancakes? Milk adds both flavor and texture to pancake batter, so if you are looking to make pancakes without milk, a simple swap to water doesn't always do the trick. For pancakes made without milk, you'll want to add some flavor through melted butter and vanilla extract.

What is the best way to flip a pancake? ›

The trick is simple: Instead of using your wrist to turn the spatula, simply use your thumb, middle, and index fingers. Isolate the three digits and use a quick twisting motion to flip the pancake. This smaller motion will use less force, and you'll be less likely to splatter the wet batter.

How to make pancakes round and fluffy? ›

Use a 1/4 cup measuring cup to pour your batter so you get perfect, evenly sized pancakes. Start pouring from the middle, then continue pouring slowly in a circular motion so that the batter spreads into perfect round shapes. Allow the pancakes to cook properly! Don't rush them on high heat, or flip them too early.
