This article is about the type of critter. For the light pet, see Fairy Pet.

The Pink Fairy, Green Fairy, and Blue Fairy are critters which will attempt to lead the player to valuable treasures, such as Life Crystals, Chests, or ore deposits. They spawn in the bottom half of the Underground layer and in the Cavern layer, but only if at least one Fallen Log is present in the world on the surface (see Fallen Log § Notes for the exact area). If all Fallen Logs have been destroyed, they will no longer spawn independently. The three fairy variants all function identically.

Fairies can also spawn at Fallen Logs and from shaken Pearlwood trees on the surface at night. In this case, they will not lead players to treasure; instead, when approached, they try to flee much like Birds. Unlike fairies spawned underground, these fairies can be caught with a Bug Net and carried around in the inventory. If released again, they act like naturally spawned fairies and will attempt to lead the player to treasure. They can also be crafted into animated decorative furniture (Fairy Jars). Once crafted, the fairies cannot be released again.

Notes

  • Fairies have a decreased spawn chance in the Underground and Cavern layer during Hardmode.
  • When a fairy spawns naturally in the lower half of the Underground or in the Caverns or is released manually, it will fly to the player and follow them. It does not take any damage, can move through blocks, and cannot be caught.
    • As soon as it is within range of a treasure (see below), it will briefly circle the player, emitting a soft chiming noise, then head in the direction of the treasure. It keeps a certain distance from the player in order to encourage being followed. Once the fairy reaches the loot, it will circle it briefly, then disappear in a burst of glowing glitter which illuminates the area for a few seconds before dying out.
    • After a maximum of 5 minutes after spawning, the fairy will fly off-screen and despawn, even if it is still leading the player to treasure at that moment.[1]
  • Every in-game minute (real-world second) between 9:18PM and 2:42AM,[2] there is a 1/180 (0.56%) chance for fairies to spawn three tiles above a random Fallen Log in the world, increased to 1/60 (1.67%) during new moons and full moons.[3]
  • The chance for a fairy to emerge from a shaken Pearlwood tree at night is 1.39%. Fairies can spawn this way even if all Fallen Logs in the world have been destroyed.
  • While a fairy is near the player, enemy spawns are reduced. The reduction effect is same as (and stackable with) Sunflowers' Happy! buff.[5]
  • It is possible for a fairy to lead the player to treasures that are out of the world's borders, even though the player cannot see or reach said treasure.
  • In Celebrationmk10 worlds, all fairies have a 5/6 (83.33%) chance to be a Pink Fairy, and fairies have an increased spawn chance in the Cavern layer.

Detecting treasure

Fairies search for treasure in a 150×100-tile rectangle centered on themselves.[6] They detect the following types of loot:[7]

  • Ores will only be considered if there are at least 40 of the same type within a 7×7 square.[8]
  • If multiple treasures are nearby, fairies will follow the same rules as the Metal Detector to determine the most valuable one.[8]

Tips

  • Capturing a fairy and releasing it allows locating treasure anywhere in the world, not just below the surface.
  • The Metal Detector pairs well with fairies, as it will indicate the type of treasure the player is being led to.
  • When a fairy leads to a Gold Chest, checking surroundings for traps can be useful, as the Chest might be a Dead Man's Chest.
  • It may be useful to destroy Chests after looting them. Fairies can lead the player to previously opened Chests, who would therefore miss the opportunity to locate valuable loot.
  • Since Fallen Logs are the reason fairies spawn, it is unwise to destroy them.
  • The fairies spawning near Fallen Logs at night are affected by the time alteration in Journey Mode's Power Menu. Freezing time will prevent fairies from spawning at Fallen Logs, whereas speeding time up will increase their spawn rate. This is especially noticeable during full and new moons.

Trivia

  • The Fairies (41)Bestiary entry for the Fairies: "Glowing winged humanoid creatures the size of a butterfly. Attuned to the world around them, they excel at finding shiny things."
