What is the easiest plant to grow on a trellis? ›

Nasturtiums (Tropaeolum) are amazingly easy to grow, making them a winner for beginner gardeners.

Another great thing about a DIY trellis is that it is easy to construct out of many different materials. One of my favorite materials to use is cedar planks. The cedar is durable and sturdy and should stand up to the elements better than some other types of wood, even without a stain or sealant.

Use Sturdy Anchors. The key to a stable freestanding trellis is using sturdy anchors. At H Potter, all our trellises, obelisks, and arbors come complete with ground spikes designed to securely anchor your trellis.

Many varieties of peas and beans need something to climb. Vine crops such as squash, melons and cucumbers can produce straighter, cleaner fruit if grown on a trellis. Many tomato varieties are “indeterminate,” or vining, which means they will continue to grow all season long.

Planting on the inside of a trellis or arbor means your climbing plants are positioned between the trellis and the structure it's against, like a wall or fence. This approach can create a lush, green backdrop, allowing your plants to grow against a solid surface.

To maximize sunlight, position trellises on the north edge of your garden bed or next to a fence or wall.

But when it comes to building heavy duty trellis specifically, wood and metal are the most popular options because they offer more sturdiness and durability. When built and protected properly, trellis made of wood or metal can withstand all kinds of weather – and for way longer than plastic trellis would, for example!

To prevent wood rot at the base of your trellis, hammer a steel rod into the soil with a mallet. Leave up to a foot of it above the surface. Lash the base of the trellis to the piece of steel. You can use any kind of thin wire for this purpose.

A trellis is a horizontal structure meant to support vines and other vegetation on lattice work. A freestanding trellis is not attached to the side of the house.

How tall should a garden trellis be? ›

We recommend a trellis that's tall enough to accommodate growing vines, but not so tall that you'd have to stretch to pick. Our trellises measure 6 feet tall, but anywhere from 4 to 6 feet will work for growing most vining plants vertically. If your vines begin to grow out of hand, pinch off the top tip of the vine.
