I snagged my plates and candlesticks from a local thrift stop because they are unique and cheap. Remove the stickers and clean well. Make sure the inside of the candlestick is completely dry so moisture will not set in.Â
Step Two: Glue Your Cake Stand Base
Simply turn your plate over and place a small about of glue on the top of the candlestick. Press down gently into the middle of your plate. Remove excess with your finger and then wipe off your finger with a paper towel.Â
I like to spin mine to make sure it’s centered.
Step Three: Dry Cake Stand Fully
There you have it! Your very own inexpensive Cake Stand Plate. You can use these for gifts, decorating, and of course – cakes!Â
Want to see a few more projects using just glue? Check out my Wood Tray Tutorial here and my Wood Charger Tutorial here. These are easy projects that are great for beginner DIYers, but also good quick ones for experienced DIYers. The tray and the chargers are so versatile and I used them all the time!
Here is a few more ways to style your glass cake plate!
Use a scalloped pie or tart pan: If you love cake stands with frilly edges, try using a tart, quiche or wavy-edged pie pan as the top of your cake stand. Just pick up an inexpensive candlestick holder at your local dollar store for the base and paint it to match whatever color your pie pan is.
Simplicity is key for a minimalist setup, which is why it is important to use very neat linen on your tables. Another idea is to incorporate candles and candelabras into your cake stand decor to emphasize the height of your cakes. The height difference can make your stand and cake stand out even more.
Pierce holes in an upside-down egg carton for an easy alternative. If you need a quick holder for your cake pops, check your fridge to see if you have an egg carton you can use. If you do, flip it upside-down, then push a stick through each egg dome. When you're finished, just prop the sticks in the holes!
Step 2: Find a place to drill your plates that is secure and a surface that won't matter if the drill goes through. Pop on your safety goggles. Step 3: Add a drop of water on each plate as you are drilling to keep the plate and drill-bit cold, then slowly and carefully drill each plate until you have a perfect hole.
The best way to prevent the cake balls from falling off the stick is by making sure you added enough frosting to the cake balls and thinning out the candy coating. If the chocolate coating is too thick it will be heavy and way down on the cake balls.
If you don't have lollipop sticks, or simply don't want to use sticks, there are many options. You can use candy sticks, like cinnamon or peppermint sticks. You can insert a spoon instead. You can also simply serve the cake pops as cake balls.
The most commonly used icing for this purpose is buttercream, as it's easy to work with and provides a sturdy foundation. Place a generous amount of icing in the center of your cake stand.
The best substitute for a traditional turntable is its shorter, less expensive cousin, the lazy Susan. Pull the spice bottles off the one in your cupboard, or stop by the home goods store to pick up an inexpensive one. Most are made of wood, plastic, or in my case, stone.
You just need a “Non-Slip” Rug Mat from the grocery store, cut it up into small 6” squares and place it directly on the turn table. Super simple, but it makes a huge difference when you're decorating.
Turn the chilled cake upside down onto a plate, remove the outside of the pan then the bottom and peel off the parchment paper then put another plate over the bottom and flip. Voila.
