Meet the Enchanting New Characters of Frozen 2 - D23 (2024)
By Savannah Salazar
For the first time in forever, our favorite characters (and new ones too!) are coming back for a journey beyond Arendelle when Frozen 2 hits theaters on November 22. Picking up three years after Anna and Elsa reunited, the sisters—along with Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven—set off into the enchanted forest where they meet a plethora of new faces.
Before you venture into the unknown with Frozen 2, we wanted to give you a look at the newest characters of Arendelle, the enchanted forest and everywhere in between.
Queen Iduna Queen Iduna—voiced by Frozen 2 newcomer Evan Rachel Wood—is back, but this time with secrets from the past. With young Elsa’s powers growing, Iduna wonders if her past holds some answers for Elsa’s future. Director Jennifer Lee said Wood’s voice was perfect for the role as Wood’s voice sounds as if she’s keeping something hidden at all times. Her singing voice also sits right between Kristen Bell (Anna) and Idina Menzel’s (Elsa) own singing voices, which is perfect for her beautiful lullaby “All is Found.”
King Agnarr Like Queen Iduna, Anna and Elsa’s father also returns—voiced by Alfred Molina. He tries his best to help Elsa as her powers grow, and his love for his daughters is infinite.
Lieutenant Destin Mattias A loyal guard of Arendelle, Mattias has long protected the kingdom against its enemies, including the Northuldra, but becomes trapped in the enchanted forest by a magical mist for over 30 years. Voiced by Sterling K. Brown, director Chris Buck said Brown invested in his character, saying there is a lot of Sterling in Mattias.
Bruni Meet your cute new obsession—because he’s most definitely ours! Bruni is a curious salamander who meets Anna and Elsa during their journey. He also takes a liking to Elsa’s icy snowflakes because—wait for it—the cold never bothered him anyways.
Yelana As the leader of the Northuldra, Yelana is extremely wise and fiercely protective when it comes to her community. While weary of outsiders, if one shows an understanding of the forest and its inhabitants, Yelana is known to soften.
Ryder You would think Kristoff was the only reindeer-loving man around, but Ryder is close to giving him a run for his money—or carrots? But as fun-loving and optimistic as Ryder is, he’s never left the enchanted forest and longs to venture into the world outside.
Honeymaren Part of the Northuldra, Honeymaren is peaceful and a free spirit and wants everyone in the enchanted forest to feel the same.
The Nokk Pulling from Nordic folklore, the Frozen 2 filmmakers were able to create this beautiful character, a mythical water spirit that takes the form of a stallion. While gorgeous, this water spirit is a warrior set to guard the secrets of the forest and is dangerous to those not careful.
Gale As full of personality as any other character in Frozen 2, the precocious wind spirit named Gale is quite a troublemaker. From tornados to slight gusts of wind, Gale isn’t always easily seen, but instead makes her presence known by interacting with the characters’ clothing or hair.
Earth Giants Also known as the earth spirits, these massive creatures are capable of incredible destruction and create a feeling of unease across the enchanted forest, but when they are asleep, they appear as rocky riverbanks.
Fire Spirit A rambunctious fireball, the magical fire spirit zips around creating chaos in the forest in a matter of seconds. Its magical fire—which appears magenta and blue—doesn’t emit smoke, but it does emit heat. The level of heat is based on its emotions, from smaller, playful flames to angry, all-consuming fires that rage throughout the forest.

Elsa
Elsa of Arendelle is a fictional character who appears in Walt Disney Animation Studios' animated fantasy film Frozen (2013), and later media of the Frozen franchise, including its sequel Frozen II (2019).
during their journey. He also takes a liking to Elsa's icy snowflakes because—wait for it—the cold never bothered him anyways. As the leader of the Northuldra, Yelana is extremely wise and fiercely protective when it comes to her community.
Iduna. Mother to Anna and Elsa, Queen Iduna (Evan Rachel Wood) is introduced in FROZEN II, and she has her own hidden past. She cares deeply for her daughters and wants to protect them at all costs, but she understands they must seek out the truth for themselves.
The Enchanted Forest is a forest located far north of Arendelle, and is home to the Northuldra people and the elemental spirits. For many years the forest was under a curse after a battle broke out between the Northuldra and guards from Arendelle.
Ahtohallan is a frozen magical river that knows everything about the past. This ability is based on one of the rules of the Frozen universe - water has memory. Because it is made of ice, Elsa can use her powers to get into Ahtohallan and see the memories of the past hidden in it.
It was about a woman's struggle and with being different. You very definitively said, "Elsa does not have a love interest in this movie." In the first movie, that was something that people found so refreshing.
DiscussingFilm, a reliable source for film updates, has confirmed that Frozen 3 is set to hit theaters in 2026. While the specific release date within the year remains elusive, fans can anticipate a cinematic return at some point during this timeline.
The reveal that she's the fifth spirit doesn't just mean she's a more powerful magic user than before. She died and was reborn to take on her true form like has happened in so many stories before. With that transformation, Frozen 2 has made Elsa an immortal spirit now.
Among the main criticisms of Frozen 2 are that a lot of the introduction feels like it's moving the characterization backward, it doesn't hit the emotional depths of the first, and while the story is ambitious, it doesn't quite work in execution.
Since Frozen and its spin-offs explored much of Arendelle, Frozen 3 may dive deeper into the lore of the Enchanted Forest and the Northuldra tribe. It may also explore Elsa's life in the Enchanted Forest after peace was restored between Northuldra and Arendelle.
When Olaf "dies," his snow is gathered by Gale and dotted with purple flowers. This is likely a reference to the scene at the end of "Frozen" when Olaf is finally experiencing warm weather in Arendelle and smells two buckets of purple flowers.
When Moana sets off into the ocean to find Maui, she packs a handful of things in her basket, and if you look close enough, you can spot Olaf's arm and nose among the pile.
According to Iduna, Ahtohallan is considered a spirit and is the "mother" of all the other spirits. According to Iduna's notes, Ahtohallan is the source of the magic in the Enchanted Forest as well as those of the spirits, including Elsa's powers.
When Elsa's ice palace is under attack, the colour of her ice changes depending on her current emotion. For instance, the ice is yellow when she combats Duke Westleton and his soldiers. However, the ice becomes purple or turns into a dark colour when she struggles to control her magic. The colour reflects her fear.
The palace's ambiance also responds to how Elsa feels about herself - when Elsa is happy and empowered, the palace is blue; when Elsa is embracing herself, the palace is purple; when Elsa is fearful, the palace becomes red, and causes ice shards and cracks to appear throughout the wall; when Elsa is angry, the palace ...
There were originally only four spirits, who were described by King Agnarr as the most powerful spirits of all—water, fire, wind, and earth. The spirits dwell in the Enchanted Forest, a magical area inhabited by the Northuldra tribe.
In the real world, a gale is the name of a very strong force of the wind. Though Gale's gender was never mentioned in the movie, she was later confirmed by creators to be a female.
