All eyes were on Scottie Scheffler entering the first round of the PGA Championship, but Xander Schauffele stole the attention before the world No. 1 player even had a chance to tee off.

Schauffele tied a major record and set a course record at Valhalla by shooting a 62 on Thursday, finishing 9-under par with a three-shot lead on the rest of the field. If Schauffele has proven anything in his major career, however, no lead is safe.

Scheffler looked mighty formidable himself in round one, starting his day with a ridiculous eagle on hole No. 1, and Rory McIlroy is sitting a 5-under after an impressive finish to his day. Both have shown in recent weeks exactly what can happen when they get hot, so it won't necessarily be easy for Schauffele to fend them off in what could be ugly conditions on Friday.

Sitting second on the leaderboard are Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala, with Theegala rattling off three consecutive birdies to rocket up to the No. 2 spot at the end of his first round. The 26-year-old has made the cut in five of his last six majors with one top-10 finish, and Louisville could be where his breakthrough happens if his second round looks anything like the end of the first.

10:08 a.m. —Scheffler is at the first tee box. Just hours after his arrest, the No. 1 golfer in the world is set for his second round at Valhalla after a whirlwind of a morning.

9:51 a.m. — Scheffler released a statement to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington. Scheffler said the situation was a misunderstanding, and that he "never intended to disregard any of the instructions" from the police officer.

The full statement read:

“This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.

“Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.”

9:45 a.m. —Jimmy Kirchdorfer, who co-owns Valhalla golf course, was reportedly the person whopicked Scheffler up from jail and drove him back to the golf course so he could make his tee time.

9:34 a.m. — The PGA released the following statement on the fatal accident that occurred near the course Friday morning:

"This morning we were devastated to learn that a worker with one of our vendors was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club. This is heartbreaking to all of us involved in the PGA Championship. We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones."

9:25 a.m. — Scheffler reportedly already hired a local attorney, Steve Romines, who claimed the entire situation was a misunderstanding. Romines added that it's Scheffler's decision whether he wants to play his round Friday.

9:15 a.m. —One of the more prominent names at the tournament won't finish play. John Daly has withdrawn from the competition due to a thumb injury. The 1991 PGA Championship winner shot 11 over par in Round 1.

9:14 a.m. —Scheffler will reportedly tee off at 10:08 a.m. ET, according to ESPN.

9:12 a.m. —Scheffler arrived at the course, and did not respond to requests to comment by media awaiting his arrival. He reportedly only responded to ESPN's Marty Smith, telling the reporter, "I love you Marty."

8:48 a.m. —According to Sports Illustrated's Pat Forde, Scheffler was released on his own recognizance. ESPN has also reported Scheffler is on his way to the course and will play the second round.

8:43 a.m. —The Kentucky Court of Justice listed the charges faced by Scheffler as second degree assault of a police officer, third degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from officers directing traffic. The assault of a police officer is considered a Class C felony.

8:36 a.m. —Scheffler's updated tee time is listed at 10:08 a.m. ET. The PGA has a policy that allows for players to miss their listed tee time and face no penalty if the committee agrees "exceptional circ*mstances prevented you from starting on time," according to SiriusXM's Jason Sobel.

8:20 a.m. —Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections records show Scheffler was booked at 7:28 a.m. ET.

7:35 a.m. — PGA officials said Round 2 starting times will be delayed by 1 hour, 20 minutes, with spectator gates opening at 8 a.m. ET. Scheffler was scheduled to tee off at 8:48 a.m. ET. It is unclear whether Scheffler remains in police custody.

7:23 a.m. — ESPN's Jeff Darlington, who witnessed Scheffler's police encounter, reported the world's No. 1 golfer was placed in handcuffs and taken away from the scene via police cruiser. Darlington shared a video of the encounter, in which an officer can be heard saying, "he's going to jail."

The PGA Championship announced an extended delay until 7:30 a.m. ET

7 a.m. — Scottie Scheffler was reportedly detailed by police while arriving at the Valhalla course Friday morning. ESPN's Jeff Darlington reported Scheffler attempted to "drive past a police officer" at the entrance to the club. ESPN said traffic flow was congested near the course, related to the shuttle bus incident.

Round 1: Thursday, May 16

7:30 p.m.— Collin Morikawa, Tom Hoge, Tom Kim and Thomas Detry all worked their way into a tie for fourth with Rory McIlroy and Robert McIntyre by finishing the round at 5-under.

There are still a few golfers who have not finished up and could still enter the top five. Austin Eckroat is 4-under through 17, Scottie Scheffler is 4-under through 16 and Alejandro Tosti is 4-under through 15.

Further down the list, Mark Hubbard is 3-under through 14 and could still climb the leaderboard with four holes to go.

6:00 p.m. — Scheffler has held steady at 3-under with five consecutive pars. He's been a machine lately, but he has to finish strong today to avoid a significant gap between himself and Xander Schauffele through round one.

5:42 p.m. — A bogey on No. 11 erases any momentum Jon Rahm was building. He's back to 3-over and is tied for 125th.

5:15 p.m. — Thomas Detry has moved into a tie for fourth on the leaderboard at 5-under through 11 holes.

4:35 p.m. — Rahm is able to stop the bleeding on hole No. 7, picking up a birdie after bogeying four of his first six holes. It hasn't been the day Rahm wanted, but there remains plenty of time to partially make up for those early struggles.

4:29 p.m. — C.T. Pan is 3-under through five holes, with back-to-back birdies on No.'s 4 and 5. Pan was among the last to tee off, but he's surging late this afternoon.

4:15 p.m. — Scheffler bogeyed at No. 5, and no one from this later group of tee times is seriously threatening to break into the top of the leaderboard just yet. Thomas Detry is notably 3-under through eight holes.

3:40 p.m. — A birdie on No. 4 moves Scheffler to 3-under through four. Quite the start.

3:18 p.m. — Rahm starts his day with two bogeys through four holes, so he's already falling behind after his rough Masters performance.

2:36 p.m. — Well, well, well. What a start for Scottie Scheffler, who posts a ridiculous eagle on his first hole.

— Fore Play (@ForePlayPod) May 16, 2024

2:24 p.m. — Billy Horschel sinks two early birdies to quickly move to 2-under through two holes. A whole bunch of big names will be teeing off soon, including Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm.

2:22 p.m. — What a finish to the day for Theegala, who rattles off three consecutive birdies to sit 6-under through round one. He's three strokes off the lead.

2:08 p.m. — Tiger Woods finishes the day 1-over par, tied for 65th at the PGA Championship. The real test will be how his body responds tomorrow as he tries to make the cut.

2:05 p.m. — Back-to-back birdies for Sahith Theegala, who just needs par on his final hole to finish 5-under for the day.

1:35 p.m. — Schauffele breaks the course record at Valhalla by shooting a 62. He tied the all-time record for best round at a major, which he already shared with two others.

1:20 p.m. — Three consecutive birdies help push Rory McIlroy right into contention as he finishes his day 5-under par.

12:58 p.m. — Robert MacIntyre has had a bogey-free day through 14 holes, enough to move into a tie for second behind Schauffele. MacIntyre's best finish at a major was sixth in the 2019 Open Championship. He's never finished higher than 49th at the PGA Championship.

12:50 p.m. — Schauffele is in line to tie the course record at Valhalla at 9-under par through 16 holes. Let's see how he finishes.

11:17 a.m. — Schauffele is now up to six birdies through 11 holes, restoring his two-shot lead.

11:04 a.m. — Three consecutive birdies have Tony Finau at 4-under through six holes. An excellent start for the 34-year-old, who sits one shot behind Schauffele.

11:04 a.m. — Tiger Woods is 1-over par through nine holes. He started on the back nine, so he's coming up on the tougher stretch now.

10:50 a.m. — What a front nine for Schauffele, who posts five birdies and holds an early two-shot lead.

9:47 a.m. —It's a birdie-fest early at Valhalla. Both Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland are already at three-under and neither has played more than six holes. It may end up being a low-scoring PGA Championship if this continues.

9:32 a.m. —Sahith Theegala is off to a fast start as well. He birdied each of his first two holes at the major, as scoring conditions are good at Valhalla on Thursday.

9:28 a.m. —Has Viktor Hovland finally figured out his swing? He's 2 under through three holes at the PGA Championship. He made tweaks to his swing after winning the 2023 FedEx Cup, but he's finally starting to look a bit more comfortable on the course.

9:20 a.m. —Tiger Woods is starting to heat up. He just made a solid birdie putt to get himself back to even par through four holes.

9:10 a.m. —Xander Schauffele continues to play well. He sinks a mid-length birdie to move to 2 under through four. He and Doug Ghim are the only two players presently at 2 under, but it seems like the field is starting to round into form as more golfers hit the course.

9:04 a.m. —Woods manages to save par on his third hole despite facing a lengthy par putt. That keeps him at 1 over and within striking distance of first place.

8:58 a.m. —Doug Ghim dropped a shot. The leaders are now all at 1 over for the tournament.

8:56 a.m. —Tiger Woods was forced to pitch out of the rough on his third hole. That puts him in danger of carding back-to-back birdies, as he is facing a 180-yard-long approach shot for his third on the hole.

8:53 a.m. —Justin Thomas is sitting at even par through three holes. The Kentucky native has gotten his birdie putts close to the hole, but he hasn't yet been able to sink them.

8:43 a.m. —Tiger Woods finds himself in trouble on his second hole, a Par 3. He missed the green with his tee shot and hit it to the edge of the bunker with his chip from the rough. That will cost him at least one stroke on the hole.

8:42 a.m. —Rory McIlroy gets off to a good start on the Par-5 10th hole. He birdies the hole to get to 1 under early.

8:41 a.m. —Doug Ghim gets to 2 under while Luke Donald bogeys his fifth hole of the day. That gives Ghim a solo standing in first place early in this major.

8:38 a.m. —Xander Schauffele is the first of the world's top 10 players to get under par. He birdied the 11th hole (his second of the day) to get to 1 under early.

8:30 a.m. —Luke Donald continues to perform well Thursday morning. He is the first to get multiple strokes under par and is sitting at 2 under after four. Doug Ghim (1 under) is the only other player currently under par.

8:15 a.m. — Tiger Woods has officially teed off at Valhalla. He starts by striping a shot down the middle of the fairway on a baby cut. Good start.

8:10 a.m.. —PGA professional Michael Block shocked the world by tying for 15th at the PGA Championship in 2023. His return to the event in 2024 didn't start well, as he is 5 over through two holes. That included a quadruple bogey on his second hole of the day.

8:05 a.m —Tee times were delayed by 10 minutes Thursday at Valhalla due to fog, but play is underway at the PGA Championship. Luke Donald notched the first birdie of the day on the first hole to kickstart golf's second major.
