![Pokémon: Why Fairy-Type is Overpowered (5) Pokémon: Why Fairy-Type is Overpowered (5)](https://i0.wp.com/static1.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Pokemon-Fairy-Types-Are-Overpowered.jpg)
There are a total of 18 types in the mainline Pokémon games, and Game Freak has added 3 since the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue Versions. Fairy is the most recent type to be added, joining the franchise in Generation VI. Although Fairy-type was initially meant to act as a counter to Dragon-type and further balance the games, it has actually surpassed Dragon in strength and become the most overpowered type in all of Pokémon.
Fairy-type's main strength is against Dragon-types, which is especially important seeing as Dragon-types are often some of the most powerfulPokémon in the games. Not only are Fairy moves super effective against Dragons, but Fairy-typePokémon also take no damage from Dragon-type moves. Complete invincibility to a type is relatively rare inPokémon, and having such an important one gives Fairy-type a considerable advantage.

In addition to countering Dragon-types, Fairy-typePokémon also thrive against Dark and Fighting-types. Considering Dark-typePokémon only had two resistance before Generation VI, and one of them was the underwhelming Bug-type, Dark-typePokémon were at times considered overpowered themselves. Fairy-types have become the go-to choice to face Dark-types in newer generations, making them crucial both for playthroughs and for competitivePokémonbattling. Having an advantage against Fighting-types is an added bonus, making Fairy-typePokémon even more versatile.
Why Fairy-TypePokémon Are Difficult To Counter

Although FairyPokémon have a meaningful advantage over 3 separate types, that alone does not make them overpowered. They have two types which both resist them and are super effective against them in Steel and Poison, and they are, theoretically, what should keep Fairy-types balanced. However, not only is being vulnerable to as few as 2 types rare in itself, but both types also have weaknesses that allow FairyPokémon to remain dominant.
Poison has traditionally been a typing which focuses on status effects, meaning most Poison-type Pokémon and their move sets are not ideal for taking down a Fairy-type threat. Similarly, Steel-type Pokémon are usually more defensively-oriented, and the typing somewhat lacks in offensive moves. Although both types have received upgrades to their move pool in recent generations, such as with the addition Steel Beam in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, they still lack when compared to other types.
Although Fairy-types are arguably the strongest in all of Pokémon, the games as a whole are fairly well-balanced when it comes to typing. Fairy-type also pales in comparison to how broken Dragon-typing was before Generation 6, and overall adding Fairy-type into the game was a major improvement.
