Popsicle Stick Fairy Doors (2024)

-9 popsicle sticks

-glue

-something to cut sticks (saw is better, I used strong wire cutters the first time, I don't recommend this!)

-small button

-crayons, pencils, markers, or paint

-Optional: sandpaper and anything you think might suit for fairies-buttons, sequins, silk flowers, ribbon, leaves, acorns-go for it. I grab interesting lichen when I find it. Just let it dry for a few days first!

I do my doors 7 sticks across with two cut at a slight angle to hold them together across the front.

I play with the angles until I like the look and draw a pencil line to follow for my cut. (I intentionally make them uneven rather that trying to make them match!)

If you want to color your door, it’s easiest to color your sticks first. You can use markers, crayons, colored pencils, or paint.

The sticks are wood, but sometimes it’s still fun to draw on them to make them look 'more' like wood since popsicle sticks are purposely made from wood with even fine grain. I made circles and stripes with maker that bled a little then added color and texture with colored pencil.

If your sticks have visible colors left over from popsicles, you can stain them or water down any color of acrylic paint to make a 'stain'

Line up your sticks! Decide if you want your door flat or arched, then decide where you want the two smaller ones to go across.

Glue! Put glue on the back of the two sticks that go across your door. Tacky glue works best.

Decorate! Do you want a doorknob, if so, where? I like using shank buttons from natural or natural looking materials. Use hot glue or tacky glue to attach them.

I love lichens, so when I see interesting ones on my walks try to collect them. Acorns and small pinecones could be fun for a fall themed door, and silk flowers add a little spring or summer touch all year round.
