Fouquet's Barrière
8ème Arr. (Champs-Élysées/Madeleine)
Hôtel Fouquet’s is meant to be a 21st century palace hotel, a contemporary complement to the classic likes of Le Crillon or the Plaza Athenée. In this it lands pretty much right on the mark. The interiors, by Jacques Garcia, are the very picture of modern (not modernist) luxury – they look to us pretty much as The Ritz’s classic interiors must have looked to the hotel critics of the year 1898.

Bulgari Hotel Paris
8th Arr. (Champs-Élysées/Madeleine)
It takes a lot to break into the top tier of Parisian hotels, but the impossibly ultra-luxe Bulgari Hotel Paris immediately became the first choice of quite a few high-end travellers. Here the utmost luxury is accompanied by a tastefulness that’s uncommon, to say the least; the Bulgari Bar is a meeting place for Parisian movers and shakers, and the vast spa is as lavish as any.

J.K. Place Paris
7th Arr. (Tour Eiffel/Musée D'Orsay)
This is the fantasy version of a stylish Parisian mansion, making its home in what was once the European Consulate on the rue de Lille, a block from the Rive Gauche. Its 29 rooms are full of unique antiques and artworks, and suffused with an elegance that’s certain to appeal to the fashion and media insiders who are likely to stay here.

La Réserve Paris
8th Arr. (Champs-Élysées/Madeleine)
While La Réserve is less ostentatious than Paris’s officially designated palace hotels, it’s every bit their equal, if not their superior – at the very least, it’s gone straight into the top tier of Parisian luxury hotels. The rooms are large by any standard but positively palatial for Paris, equipped with every imaginable luxury, from Carrara marble baths to Toto washlets and individual butler service.

The Peninsula Paris
16th Arr. (Trocadéro)
As is their forte, Peninsula’s hospitality extends well beyond their own walls, thanks to a trademark fleet of stylish sedans, including a gleaming 1934 Rolls Royce Phantom II and a quirky Citroën fourgonnette. One might use them en route to the hotel’s other trademark, a series of 'Academy' excursions – to the opera, a VIP Versailles experience, or an in-depth vineyard tour in the heart of the Champagne province.

Le Royal Monceau
8th Arr. (Champs-Élysées/Madeleine)
Le Royal Monceau has been redesigned from top to bottom by none other than Philippe Starck. Here, seemingly unconstrained by budgetary concerns, Starck’s imagination runs wild. Underneath the miraculous design, however, is not some fly-by-night boutique, but an impeccably crafted and luxurious top-tier hotel, with all the trappings that entails.

Park Hyatt Paris – Vendôme
2nd Arr. (La Bourse)
Leave the tourists to gawk at the ostentatious facade of the Hôtel Ritz on the Place Vendôme. The smart money is on – and presumably in – Park Hyatt Paris – Vendôme. Luxurious rooms are a given in a Park Hyatt; here the value added comes from the inspired design, mixing neutral tones with rich textures, moody lighting and hybrid antique-modern furnishings – classic silhouettes rendered in crisp contemporary forms and colours.
