We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (1)

Great bedding doesn’t just dress up your bedroom—it also keeps you comfortable and helps you to sleep better at night. “The bedroom is the one room in the home that should be extra-comfortable and luxurious,” says interior designer Tiffani Baumgart. “Bedding is the first step in that process.” The only problem? There are seemingly endless places to buy bedding, which can make outfitting your bedroom a bit overwhelming.

We regularly test all types of bedding—sheets, comforters, pillows, and more—both in our Lab and at home. In fact, we’ve evaluated 236 sheet sets to date. We vetted the bedding brands we order from most often based on material quality, product variety, shipping and return policies, customer service, and overall shopping experience.

Our top picks include luxury bedding brands, budget-friendly big-box stores, and everything in between. We’ve even included Real Simple Selects-approved products—products that have earned our seal of approval after going through our meticulous testing process. In addition to Baumgart, we tapped interior designer Andrea May for more insight.

The Citizenry

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (2)

What Stands Out

  • The Citizenry’s bedding selection is small, curated, and filled with handcrafted finds.

What Could Be Improved

  • The store gives you just 30 days to make returns and often charges a $25 return fee.

The Citizenry is the most expensive bedding brand on our list, but given its commitment to quality and artisanship (which we validated in our testing!), we think it’s worth the splurge. We’ve found that the brand’s sheets are light and airy yet still durable and stain resistant.

Though The Citizenry’s bedding section is small and curated, it’s packed with quality finds. All of its items are Standard 100 certified by Oeko-Tex and handcrafted by artisans across the globe. And since they’re sold as sets and separates, you can stock up on exactly what you need.

Whereas some bedding brands have limited color selections, The Citizenry offers its pieces in a range of hues and prints. The brand’s Stonewashed Linen Sheet Set—which was one of the best linen sheets we tested—is available in 13 colors and three prints.

Though The Citizenry’s pieces are pricey, the store offers free shipping on most items. And shipping takes between seven and 10 days—though if you’re buying a low-stock item, it can take much longer. Just make sure you’re confident with your purchase, as the Citizenry gives you just 30 days to return most items and charges a $25 fee on many returns.

Parachute

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (4)

What Stands Out

  • Parachute offers free shipping on all orders, 60-day returns, and complimentary design services.

What Could Be Improved

  • The brand’s bedding is pricey, with sheet sets starting at $129 and duvet covers starting at $150.

Looking to invest in premium bedding? Parachute has you covered. The brand was founded in 2014 to deliver luxe bedding straight to your doorstep, and years later, it’s still one of our favorite spots for cozy, investment-worthy pieces. When we test Parachute sheets, we often describe them as breathable, durable, and soft to the touch.

Parachute sells every kind of bedding product imaginable: sheets, quilts, shams, comforters—even pillows and duvet inserts. And since the brand sells sets and separates, it’s easy to stock up on exactly what you need. All of Parachute’s products are Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, meaning they're made without harmful chemicals. And although Parachute specializes in luxe materials—like organic cotton, European flax linen, and washed velvet—almost all of its bedding is machine-washable.

One of our favorite things about Parachute is that it offers free 60-day returns on most of its pieces—giving you plenty of time to decide how you feel about your latest purchase. It also offers free standard shipping on all orders and provides complimentary design services. And if you need anything, you can reach customer service via chat or email, or you can set up a scheduled phone appointment.

Real Simple Selects-Approved Products:

Coyuchi

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (6)

What Stands Out

  • Coyuchi specializes in artisan bedding that meets high standards for quality, sustainability, and organic practices.

What Could Be Improved

  • The brand’s bedding is expensive, and it only offers free shipping on orders over $300.

If you’re committed to buying organic sheets, give Coyuchi a look. We’ve tested four different sheet sets from the brand, and we found that they are great at wicking away moisture and resisting stains. We also appreciate that its sheets have deep pockets to prevent them from sliding off thick mattresses. The brand also makes some of the most beautiful blankets and quilts you can find, and its products meet the highest standards for quality, sustainability, and organic practices.

Many bedding brands focus on essentials, like sheets, pillows, and duvets. Coyuchi covers these bases—offering organic cotton sheets, wool duvet inserts, and handy bedding bundles. But it also goes beyond the basics, selling artisan blankets, handmade quilts, and other special finds. These handcrafted items set Coyuchi apart from other bedding brands, and since they’re handcrafted, we think they’re worth the splurge.

Coyuchi holds itself to high-quality standards, so its bedding is packed with certifications. All of Coyuchi’s products are Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Fair Trade, and Made Safe certified.

The brand also offers free shipping on orders over $300—a high threshold, but one that’s easy to meet when shopping at the store. And if you’re hesitant to invest, Coyuchi’s whopping 365-day return policy on most items should ease your mind. Customer service is also easy to reach: Just chat with, email, or call them, or fill out a submission form on the website.

Real Simple Selects-Approved Products:

Materials: Organic cotton, organic linen, wool, down, organic latex | Product Variety: Sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, comforters, quilts, blankets, shams, pillows, speciality pillows, duvet inserts, pillow protectors, mattress pads, bedding bundles | Certifications: GOTS, Fair Trade, Made Safe | Return Policy: 1 year

Brooklinen

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (8)

What Stands Out

  • Brooklinen sells high-quality bedding for less and offers 365-day returns on most of its products.

What Could Be Improved

  • Returns aren’t free, and you have to spend over $100 to get free shipping.

If you want to score a deal on high-quality bedding, Brooklinen is the place to shop. Founded by textile experts, the brand specializes in top-notch essentials that don’t cost a fortune.

Brooklinen sells everything you need to outfit your bed from top to bottom, including sheets, quilts, throw blankets, memory foam pillows, mattress toppers, and duvet inserts. These items are sold separately and in sets, so you can buy exactly what you need. Just check what comes in your bedding bundle before buying it—some include flat sheets, while others don’t.

Most of Brooklinen’s sheets are Oeko Tex Standard 100 certified, meaning they’re made without harmful chemicals. And the brand’s down comforters and pillows are certified by the Down Association of Canada (Downmark), meaning they’re made from top-quality materials.

Our favorite thing about buying from Brooklinen? The brand offers 365-day returns on most products. Unfortunately, it recently started charging $10 fees for returns. And while most items ship in four to 10 days, the brand only offers free shipping when you spend over $100.

Real Simple Selects-Approved Products:

Materials: Cotton, linen, cashmere, mulberry silk, down, down alternative, memory foam | Product Variety: Sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, quilts, throw blankets, shams, pillows, duvet inserts, pillow protectors, mattress toppers, bedding bundles | Certifications: Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex, Downmark | Return Policy: 1 year

Amazon

What Stands Out

  • Amazon has everything you need in one place, and it typically gives you free fast shipping and free 30-day returns.

What Could Be Improved

  • The store aggregates products from third-party sellers, so its selection isn’t curated and shipping/return policies may vary.

Amazon is called “the everything store” for a reason—it truly has it all. So it should come as no surprise that Amazon has plenty of great bedding worth considering.

On Amazon, you can find pretty bed linens, like sheets, comforters, throw blankets, and shams. You can also score essentials, like mattress toppers and pillow protectors. And the store really shines when you need something specific, like a fitted sheet for a twin XL bed or a temperature-regulating pillow insert. Most bedding brands sell just a few of these items—if they sell them at all. Being able to buy everything you need in one place is endlessly convenient.

Since Amazon aggregates products from other retailers, its bedding selection isn’t very curated. But when it comes to variety and convenience, the retailer can’t be beat. Its website is easy to navigate, orders take no time to place, and customer service is quick to respond (especially if you use the chat box). And while shipping and return policies vary from third-party seller to third-party seller, Amazon Prime members can typically expect free shipping and free 30-day returns on most items.

Real Simple Selects-Approved Products:

Materials: Cotton, polyester, linen, eucalyptus lyocell, bamboo rayon, wool, down, down alternative, memory foam, gel | Product Variety: Sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, quilts, comforters, throw blankets, shams, pillows, duvet inserts, pillow protectors, mattress protectors, mattress toppers, bedding bundles | Certifications: Varies by product | Return Policy: 30 days

Boll & Branch

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (12)

What Stands Out

  • Boll & Branch offers its organic cotton sheets in three ultra-soft weaves, and the alpaca wool throws are made of humanely sourced materials.

What Could Be Improved

  • Its return window is relatively short compared to its competitors.

Boll & Branch sells a range of home essentials, but it’s best known for its bedding. The brand’s organic cotton sheets are some of the finest around, and we especially loved the Signature Hemmed Sheet Set in our testing.

The organic cotton sheets come in three ultra-soft weaves: silky-smooth sateen, crisp percale, and breathable chambray. And since Boll & Branch’s cotton is GOTS and Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex certified, you can rest assured knowing you're paying for quality. The brand’s quilts and blankets are made of top-quality organic cotton, and its down pillows, down duvet inserts, and alpaca wool throws are made of responsibly sourced materials.

Most Boll & Branch items ship within six days and arrive in elegant packaging that makes a great first impression. Unfortunately, the return window is nothing to write home about—just 30 days. But if you notice that something you bought has been marked down within two weeks of your purchase, the brand will grant you a partial refund, thus giving you the discount you missed out on. And you can easily reach customer service via text, call, or email.

Real Simple Selects-Approved Products:

Materials: Organic cotton, flax linen, wool, down, down alternative | Product Variety: Sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, quilts, blankets, pillows, duvet inserts | Certifications: Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex, GOTS | Return Policy: 30 days

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (13)

Cozy Earth

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (14)

What Stands Out

  • Cozy Earth offers free shipping on orders over $50, a 100-day trial period, and a 10-year warranty.

What Could Be Improved

  • The brand only sells bedding in two materials: bamboo viscose and bamboo linen.

Want to stock up on top-quality bedding made of natural materials? Cozy Earth is the right place to turn. The brand specializes in sleep essentials—like bedding and pajamas—that are soft, breathable, and perfect for cozying up with.

Its bedding comes in just two fabrics: bamboo viscose and a bamboo-linen blend, both of which we’ve tested. While both materials are cooling and breathable, we recommend the bamboo sheets for people who sleep hot and prefer a silky-smooth texture. Cozy Earth also sells nice-to-haves, like silk pillows, silk/bamboo comforters, and bamboo blankets—and many of these items arrive inside a reusable tote bag.

Some, but not all, Cozy Earth products are listed as Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified. But the brand offers some of the most generous shipping and return policies around—free shipping on orders over $50, a 100-day trial period, and a 10-year warranty. It’s also easy to get in touch with customer service: You can email, call, or chat with them, or fill out a submission form on the website.

Real Simple Selects-Approved Products:

Materials: Bamboo rayon, bamboo-linen blend, silk | Product Variety: Sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, blankets, shams, pillows, duvet inserts, mattress pads, bedding bundles | Certifications: Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex | Return Policy: 100 days

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (15)

Saatva

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (16)

What Stands Out

  • Its splurge-worthy bedding basics are made with top-notch materials, like certified organic cotton, Belgian flax linen, and hypoallergenic latex.

What Could Be Improved

  • The brand’s bedding is pricey, and shipping takes five to eight days.

Although Saatva started as a luxury mattress company, it’s since expanded to offer a range of upscale bedding basics, like splurge-worthy sheets and pillows. We’ve tested all types of bedding from the brand, but we’re partial to the Percale Sheet Set, which washes extremely well and provides plenty of airflow.

Saatva’s bedding selection is small, easy to navigate, and packed with top-notch finds. Its sheets are made of premium materials, like organic cotton and Belgian flax linen. And its covers range from lightweight cotton-viscose quilts to cozy cotton-velvet blankets. The brand also stands out for its luxe mattress toppers and pillows, which are made of quality materials, like graphite-infused memory foam and hypoallergenic latex, and covered with organic cotton.

All of Saatva’s bedding is certified Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex, and its organic pieces are GOTS certified. If you need help while shopping, you can consult a Saatva sleep guide by messaging in a chatbox or calling the brand over the phone. The site offers free shipping on all bedding, free 45-day returns, and 180-day returns on mattress toppers. Our only complaint? It can take five to eight days for your order to ship, which is long compared to some of our other favorite places to buy sheets.

Real Simple Selects-Approved Products:

Materials: Cotton, linen, silk, down alternative, latex, memory foam | Product Variety: Sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, quilts, blankets, weighted blankets, shams, pillows, duvet inserts, mattress protectors, mattress toppers, bedding bundles | Certifications: Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex, GOTS | Return Policy: 45 days (180 days for mattress toppers)

West Elm

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (18)

What Stands Out

  • West Elm offers eye-catching bedding, bedding essentials, and customizable bedding bundles all in one place.

What Could Be Improved

  • There's only a 30-day return window.

West Elm isn’tjust packed with on-trend furniture and decor—it’s also filled with eye-catching linens that would look great on any bed. We’ve tested four sheet sets from the brand—including Tencel, cotton percale, linen, and organic percale options—all of which proved to be durable and well-made.

West Elm ticks all the bedding boxes, offering quilts, comforters, blankets, and sheets in a range of colors, prints, and textures. And if you use West Elm’s Build Your Own Bedding Set feature, you can piece together a custom bedding set—mixing and matching items within the same collection until you have exactly what you need. The site also sells bedding necessities, like pillows, duvet inserts, and mattress pads. And many of its bedding items come with GOTS, RDS, and/or Oeko-Tex certifications.

Though West Elm’s shipping policies suggest otherwise, we’ve found the store offers free standard shipping on most bedding orders. Items typically ship within four to five days. Unfortunately, West Elm’s 30-day return window is one of the tightest on our list.

Real Simple Selects-Approved Products:

Materials: Cotton, polyester, linen, eucalyptus lyocell, down, down alternative | Product Variety: Sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, comforters, quilts, throw blankets, shams, pillows, duvet inserts, mattress toppers, bed skirts, bedding bundles | Certifications: Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex, GOTS, RDS | Return Policy: 30 days

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (19)

Quince

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (20)

What Stands Out

  • Quince sells luxurious bedding at affordable prices, offers free shipping on all orders, and gives you 365 days to return most items.

What Could Be Improved

  • Most items ship in 6–9 days, and there’s no way to expedite shipping.

If you want luxurious bedding that won’t break the bank, Quince is the perfect place to turn. The brand sells splurge-worthy essentials at mid-range price points, so its site is packed with bedding that looks and feels more expensive than it is. We’ve tested five sets of sheets from Quince, and they were soft, lightweight, and made of high-quality materials.

Quince also sells duvet covers, pillowcases, and blankets, and all of them are made of top-notch materials. You can score organic cotton bedding in four cozy weaves: silky sateen, crisp percale, soft flannel, and plush velvet. You can also find options made from flax linen, bamboo, Tencel jersey, and mulberry silk. And you can pick from a range of cozy cashmere throws.

Except for the Mulberry silk sheets, all of these essentials are refreshingly affordable. And though Quince gives you lots of options, it makes shopping a breeze. Color options are clearly listed under every product, and the brand offers free shipping as well as 365-day returns.

Our only qualm with shopping at Quince is that you can’t expedite shipping. Most items arrive within six to nine days, and we found there’s nothing you can do to speed things up.

Real Simple Selects-Approved Products:

Materials: Organic cotton, linen, Tencel jersey, bamboo, mulberry silk, cashmere, down, down alternative | Product Variety: Sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, quilts, throw blankets, pillows, duvet inserts | Certifications: Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex | Return Policy: 365 days

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (21)

Walmart

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (22)

What Stands Out

  • Walmart’s bedding section contains over 40,000 items, including budget-friendly basics and hard-to-find essentials.

What Could Be Improved

  • Lots of Walmart’s bedding comes from third-party sellers with variable shipping schedules.

Walmart is loaded with budget-friendly home essentials, so it’s a great place to stock up on bedding. Because Walmart is so big—and its website is so wide-ranging—its bedding section is tough to find. But once you’re there, you’ll have over 40,000 options to sift through.

Walmart sells every kind of bedding you can think of. We’re talking sheets, pillowcases, comforters, and quilts—you can even find pillows, duvet inserts, and mattress pads. There’s bedding fit for every mattress size, including harder-to-find sizes like twin XL and split king. Just remember that Walmart is both a seller and an aggregator, so to avoid third-party sellers, you have to filter by “Walmart” under “Retailer.”

Walmart offers 90-day returns on most items, which you can mail in or bring to the store. And its customer service representatives proved attentive and helpful every time we chatted with them. The store also provides free on orders of $35 or more, and many items ship in just two days. Unfortunately, its third-party sellers are a little less predictable.

Real Simple Selects-Approved Products:

Materials: Cotton, polyester, linen, silk, wool, velvet, down, down alternative, foam, buckwheat | Product Variety: Sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, quilts, comforters, throw blankets, shams, pillows, duvet inserts, mattress toppers | Certifications: Varies by product | Return Policy: 90-day returns for items shipped and sold by Walmart

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (23)

Wayfair

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (24)

What Stands Out

  • The site’s bedding section contains over 50,000 items, and most of them cost less than $175.

What Could Be Improved

  • Wayfair doesn’t let you filter out third-party sellers, so it’s not always clear who you’re ordering from.

Wayfair is a destination for all kinds of home goods, and its bedding selection doesn’t disappoint. Visit the online store, and you’ll find over 50,000 kinds of bedding—and many of those options are both stylish and affordable.

Though Wayfair’s bedding selection is expansive, we found it easy to navigate, particularly if you go in with an idea of what you’re looking for. You can filter by type of bedding, bed size, material, and more. The site sells everything from sheets and pillowcases to down comforters and duvet inserts. You can even find bed skirts, weighted blankets, and heated throws. Most of these products cost less than $175, and they’re made from a range of materials, like cotton, linen, and chenille. The only downside? Wayfair lists products from dozens of brands, and it’s not easy to filter out third-party sellers.

Wayfair offers free shipping on orders over $35—an easy threshold to meet—and gives you just 30 days to return most items. Customer service is also accessible: You can reach them via phone, text, or email if you ever have questions or concerns.

Real Simple Selects-Approved Products:

Materials: Cotton, polyester, linen, silk, velvet, chenille | Product Variety: Sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, quilts, comforters, throw blankets, shams, bed skirts, pillows, duvet inserts, bed skirts, electric blankets | Certifications: Varies by product | Return Policy: 30-day returns

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (25)

Target

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (26)

What Stands Out

  • Target strikes the perfect balance between the variety and low prices of a big-box store and the style and curated feel of a smaller retailer.

What Could Be Improved

  • Though the store sells lots of bedding, only a few pieces are certified organic.

When it comes to bedding, Target strikes the perfect middle ground. The big-box store wins on variety, offering everything from pretty comforters to hypoallergenic mattress pads. But since the retailer has a curated feel, you can reliably find stylish stuff there.

Target sells over 4,000 bedding sets, over 2,000 comforters, and over 1,500 sheets and pillowcases. But since you can filter by bed size, color, materials, and more, all those options are easy to sift through. The store’s curated in-house brands (like Opalhouse, Threshold, and Hearth & Hand With Magnolia) make shopping even easier. Once you’ve found an in-house brand you love, you can head straight there and filter out the other options. Some of Target’s bedding is also backed by certifications. It sells a few organic bedding items, which are GOTS-certified, and many others are Oeko-Tex certified.

One of the best things about Target is that it offers 90-day returns. And while the retailer charges a $6 standard shipping fee, we’ve found it waives that charge on orders over $35—which is a pretty low threshold to meet. There are other ways to order, too: Many items are also available for in-store pickup or same-day delivery through Shipt.

Real Simple Selects-Approved Products:

Materials: Cotton, polyester, linen, eucalyptus lyocell, bamboo rayon, silk, wool, down, down alternative, latex | Product Variety: Sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, comforters, quilts, throw blankets, shams, pillows, duvet inserts, pillow protectors, mattress toppers, bed skirts, bedding bundles | Certifications: Varies by product | Return Policy: 90 days

Lands’ End

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (28)

What Stands Out

  • Lands’ End sells everything from basic bedding to niche essentials, and many items come in an array of colors or prints.

What Could Be Improved

  • The store’s bedding isn’t backed by many certifications, and it only offers free shipping on orders over $99.

You might know Lands’ End as a clothing company, but the retailer sells a lot more than classic jackets and flannel shirts. The store’s bedding section is buried on its website, but once you get there, you’ll find items that are cute, cozy, and competitively priced.

There are great bedding basics, like cozy patterned cotton sheets and colorful down comforters. But you can also find very specific products, like pleated cotton bed skirts and monogrammed baby blankets. This variety makes Lands’ End a great one-stop shop for bedding. And the range of colors, prints, and price points makes it easy to find what you’re looking for.

Although Lands’ End's bedding doesn't boast as many certifications as you’ll find elsewhere, all of its down is RDS-certified, meaning it's sourced responsibly, and much of its bedding is machine-washable.

As you shop, keep in mind that Lands’ End only offers free shipping on orders over $99, but it does offer a generous 90-day return policy on most items. And you can reach customer service via chat, phone, or email.

Real Simple Selects-Approved Products:

Nest Bedding

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (30)

What Stands Out

  • Nest Bedding’s selection is small and easy to sift through, and there’s a customer service chat box on every page.

What Could Be Improved

  • The brand may not sell exactly what you’re looking for, and its 30-day return policy is short compared to competitors.

Nest Bedding specializes in top-notch mattresses, but it also sells cozy bedding. The brand offers a small range of sheets, blankets, and comforters, making it easy to outfit your bed from top to bottom.

Its site doesn't overwhelm you with options, which could be good or bad depending on your shopping preferences. For those who prefer quality over quantity, we think this site has the perfect selection. It sells sheets made of Tencel, bamboo, cotton percale, and cotton sateen—and we’ve tested all of these options. We noticed that Nest Bedding’s sheets are typically very breathable, durable, and cool to the touch. But the brand also sells silk pillowcases, throw blankets, and wool comforters. Many of its products are Fair Trade and Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex certified, meaning they’re made sustainably and free of harmful chemicals.

The brand offers free shipping on orders over $75, but there’s no way to speed up delivery. (When we ordered sheets through the website, we were limited to standard shipping.) It's also worth noting that its 30-day return policy is a little short compared to some other bedding brands. Overall, we love how user-friendly Nest Bedding’s website is. And though we didn’t need it, we appreciate that customer service is easy to reach. There’s a chat box on every page, so if you need anything, help is just a message away.

Real Simple Selects-Approved Products:

Materials: Cotton, organic cotton, Tencel lyocell, bamboo, silk, wool, jersey | Product Variety: Sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, comforters, throw blankets, pillows, mattress protectors | Certifications: Fair Trade, Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex | Return Policy: 30 days

Casper

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (32)

Casper stands out as a bedding powerhouse, offering high-quality goods that are surprisingly affordable, too. The brand’s “bedding shop” provides all the essentials, including duvets, sheets, blankets and throws, quilts and shams, mattress protectors, mattress toppers, and pillows. If you prefer saving money on a set, Casper’s bedding bundles combine these products for a better price.

The website is easy to sort through—you can browse a specific section if you know what you’re looking for, or you can peruse the “bedding shop,” where all products are organized on one scrollable page. Each product description includes clearly labeled sections detailing measurements and dimensions, materials and certifications, and warranting and shipping information. We tested a variety of pillows, sheets, and mattress toppers from the brand and found them to be cooling and comfortable. The Casper Foam Pillow with Snow Technology was a fan favorite due to its cozy heaviness and cooling properties.

The brand offers a 30-day return policy and free shipping, with orders typically arriving within two to four weeks from the placement date. Certifications vary between products: The down pillows are Responsible Down Standard (RDS), the foam pillows use CertiPUR-US foam and an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 cover, and the sheets cover a range of Global Organic Textile (GOTS), Oeko-Tex Certified, and GHCL Limited (Textile Division). If you have questions, you can use the chat function to talk with customer service or call a sleep specialist over the phone, though the expansive FAQ section will likely have the answers you’re looking for.

Pottery Barn

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (34)

With its expansive selection of pretty much every home essential, it’s no surprise that Pottery Barn also offers high-quality bedding. From sheets and pillowcases to mattress toppers and duvet inserts, the brand has you covered. While the website’s general bedding tab might seem overwhelming, you can easily filter based on type of bedding, fabric, and color. You can also shop individual items from the brand’s predesigned “bedding looks,” making it easy for anyone to find inspiration.

We tested six of the brand’s sheet sets and found them to be breathable and soft. The Cozy Brushed Cotton Flannel Sheet Set stood out as the most breathable flannel sheet set in our testing, combining the cozy feel of traditional flannel with a refreshing airiness. Pottery Barn’s bedding is both Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex and Fair Trade certified, so you don’t have to worry about harmful chemicals. Pottery Barn also offers free shipping, though it’s worth noting that its 30-day return policy is one of the shorter ones we’ve seen. You can track your order as soon as it’s been shipped, and you can call, text, or chat with customer service on the site with any inquiries.

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (36)

Offering exclusively bed and bath goods, Riley’s website is easier to navigate than more general retailers. It offers a very limited selection of comforters—it only offers one down option and one down alternative—though it makes up for it in its variety of sheets. Crafted in a fourth-generation textile mill in Portugal, the brand’s sheets felt extremely well-made in our testing. Those who prefer no top sheet may particularly like the Riley Sateen Sheet Set, which we found crisp and airy. And if you’re feeling sure of your purchase, the brand’s final sale section offers extra steep discounts.

Riley’s bedding products are all Oeko-Tex certified, and down products Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certified, ensuring humane animal treatment. The brand offers free shipping on orders over $100, which won’t be hard to hit. It also has a generous 60-day return policy, though returns will cost an additional $10. Standard shipping typically takes up to five business days, though you can select two-day shipping to rush your delivery. Riley’s customer service is available via live chat on the site.

L.L.Bean

We Tested 236 Sheet Sets to Find the Best Places to Buy Bedding Online (38)

Known for its wide variety of outdoor goods and apparel, L.L.Bean boasts a surprisingly expansive bedding selection. The bedding is hidden within the “home goods” tab, so you may have to dig a bit to find what you’re looking for. Luckily, the brand offers an abundance of filter options, including the options to filter by bed size, fabric, insulation, pattern, price, and more. Though these filters are helpful for those who know exactly what they’re looking for, the list of options may overwhelm some.

L.L.Bean’s sheets particularly excelled in our testing—we loved the brand’s flannel sheets so much that they earned two spots on our list of Best Flannel Sheets. Many of the sheet sets come in a variety of colors, and some even feature fun prints, making them an extra-versatile choice for any personal preference. Product certifications vary by product, so we recommend checking the item description before you make a purchase. You can get free shipping on orders over $75, and there’s a generous 365-day return policy (with a $6.50 return fee). If you have additional questions, the brand allows you to chat with an expert for instant answers.

Real Simple Selects-Approved Products:

Materials: Cotton, cotton blend, cotton percale, flannel, fleece, pima cotton, wool | Product Variety: Sheets, comforters, blankets and throws, quilts and bedspreads, mattress pads, bed skirts, pillows | Certifications: Varies by product | Return Policy: One year

Our Testing Process

We vetted the best places to buy bedding in two ways. First, we used our experience ordering sheets for testing. We’ve evaluated 236 sheet sets to date, so we took the 27 bedding brands we order from most frequently and thoroughly assessed each one.

We evaluated our experience navigating each website, placing an order, making a return (if needed), and interacting with customer service (if needed). We took note of delivery windows, shipping fees, return policies, packaging, and what condition the products were in when they arrived. We also considered other factors, such as product variety, material quality, and most importantly, how the retailer’s bedding actually performed in our tests.

This leads us to the second part of our process: a case study analyzing all the sheets we’ve tested. We looked at the results from our past tests and searched for patterns among thread count, material, weave, price, and more. While there wasn’t a correlation between thread count and performance in our testing, we did find that expensive sheets ($250+) typically scored the highest. We also found that linen and cotton sheets generally performed better than other materials. With all of those insights, we were able to compile our list of the best bedding brands.

How to Shop for Bedding Like a Pro

Material

Great bedding doesn’t just look good—it also feels great. To maximize comfort, Baumgart recommends buying bedding made of natural materials, like bamboo, cotton, and linen. You can also find natural bedding made of silk, wool, and eucalyptus. Once you find a material you love, buy from brands that specialize in that material and source it from quality places. Then, extend the life of your bedding by properly storing it and finding chemical-free ways to clean it.

Product Variety

One easy way to differentiate between different bedding retailers is to look at how many products they offer. Some brands sell just a few essentials, while others list hundreds of products across a range of categories. Both types have strengths: Curated retailers demand less shopping time, while expansive retailers are bound to have everything you need. So determine what bedding you need to buy, look for brands that sell those necessities, and consider how many options you want to sift through before making a purchase.

Certifications

The bedding industry is big on certifications, which affirm that a retailer has met a set of varying standards when creating a given product. The Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex certification confirms that textiles are free of harmful substances. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification confirms that a product is made of at least 95 percent organic fibers and that a brand’s production and manufacturing process is socially and environmentally responsible from start to finish. The Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certification confirms that down feathers and filling were sourced responsibly and ethically from RDS-certified farms. These are the major third-party certifications, but you’ll find more out there for safety, sustainability, and responsible labor practices.

Return Policy

Shipping and return policies can make or break your experience with a retailer, especially when it comes to something as personal as bedding. So be sure to read the fine print before you make a purchase. Fortunately, many of our favorite places to buy bedding offer return policies ranging from 30 to 365 days. And many offer free returns, so you don’t have to budget for restock fees.

Questions You Might Ask

What’s the best month to buy bedding?

If you want to score a great deal, buy bedding in January. Home textiles—like bedding, rugs, and towels—often go on sale in January because retailers want to make room for the new year’s products. Some retailers also hold mid-year sales in July. So if you miss the January window, look for budget-friendly bedding in July.

How often should you replace your bedding?

If you’re washing your bedding as often as you should, you’ll probably need a fresh set every few years. Since sheets and pillowcases see the most wear and tear, you should replace them every two to three years. Duvet covers and comforters can last longer—about five to 10 years. If your bedding starts tearing, fraying, or showing signs of wear, you’ll want to replace it even sooner. And to extend the life of your bedding, May recommends buying at least two sets of sheets for each bed. That way, you can alternate between sets so that they last longer

How much should you expect to spend on high-quality bedding?

We’ve tested hundreds of sheet sets, and most of our favorites cost between $150 and $300—with an average price of $181. Overall, we found that cheap sheets (under $50) were disappointing, affordable sheets ($50 to $100) offered great value, mid-range sheets ($100 to $250) were hit or miss, and expensive sheets (over $250) were worth the splurge. If you want great bedding, May suggests buying the “best-quality sheets for your budget.” Want even more in-depth recommendations? We’ve written extensively about the best sheets we’ve tested.
