William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital brings together the knowledge, expertise, research, and innovation of a world-class medical institution into one remarkable facility — with the patient at the center of it all.

To meet a greater-than-expected need for specialty patient care in North Texas and the surrounding states, UT Southwestern recently completed a $502 million expansion of the hospital. Opened for patients in 2020, the 12-story third tower serves as the clinical home for the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute and adds operating rooms, interventional suites, a newly expanded Emergency Department, and two new parking facilities. The project enhances both the quality of care and the efficiency of delivery to accommodate growth.

Clements University Hospital has been designated a Level IV Basic Trauma Facility by the Texas Department of State Health Services. That means we can:

  • Provide resuscitation, stabilization, and assessment of injury victims and either give treatment or arrange for appropriate transfer to a higher-level designated trauma facility
  • Offer ongoing educational opportunities in trauma-related topics for health care professionals and the public
  • Implement targeted injury prevention programs

In addition, certain trauma patients who choose us for care will now have the option of having Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transport them to CUH.

Patient and Family Experience

William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital was designed with the care and comfort of patients and their families in mind.

The landscaping surrounding the hospital creates a calming environment that helps reduce stress for patients and their families.Privacy and providing a peaceful, quiet environment were priorities in the design process. The hospital’s innovative layout allows deliveries of most supplies to bypass patient hallways, reducing the noise and activity that can disturb patients’ rest.

For patients, the process of checking into the hospital, navigating it, and being discharged have all been made easier. One distinctive feature is a special patient discharge area so that when patients are ready to leave the hospital, they can do so, with whatever assistance they need, more privately and quietly than going through the main entrance.

Quality, Safety, and Efficiency

The William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital was planned and built with quality, safety, and efficiency as top priorities. The result is a facility where every detail contributes to enhanced patient care.

  • The building was designed in a series of Vs, as a way of reducing the distances that caregivers must travel to reach patients on the patient care floors.
  • The design also allows for simpler wayfinding and creates better adjacencies for care providers, as well as better visibility for team members to see each other, all of which contribute to reduced confusion and noise.
  • Nursing stations are located immediately outside patient rooms, which helps to facilitate patient observation and reduce distractions.
  • An innovative chute system that quickly whisks trash and used linen away from patient areas was incorporated into the building to help prevent infections.
  • Floor coloring was designed to reduce the risk of accidents by making dropped items easier to spot.
  • A sophisticated air filtration system provides fresher, cleaner air throughout the hospital, which helps to reduce the risk of infections. Additionally, the hospital features specialized water treatment systems, which also work to reduce the spread of illness.

This focus on quality, safety, and efficiency – combined with the expertise of our caregivers and the use of advanced technology – means that Clements University Hospital offers a level of care and medical sophistication unparalleled in this region. In fact, the hospitalhas received a national Vizient Rising Star Award for its quality and safety efforts, being recognized as the most patient-centered academic medical center, as well as among the top 10 institutions in diminished mortality rates in the country on the Vizient Scorecard, a national database that includes 95% of academic medical centers in the U.S. and Canada.
