What is the best tractor attachment for spreading gravel? ›

A box blade is used primarily for spreading material like soil or gravel, and for grading, leveling, or backfilling an expansive area of land for a driveway, lawn, garden, building site, etc.

In a corner preferably. Use a wheel loader, backhoe, skid steers to grab from the pile and dump it around the plot. Get inside the CASE bulldozer and spread the material. Now use a grader to level it out.

Pull gravel from the left side of the driveway towards the center: Set the box blade scraper so that it's 1 ½ inches lower on the left side and pull the left side closer to the tractor at a 45-60° angle. Slowly drive along the left side of the driveway so the blade digs in about ½ inch to move the gravel.

Our massive line of spreaders and tenders tend to focus on larger work sites. But, if you need to tidy up a gravel driveway leading to your home, then a power rake would work best for you.

Make sure the gravel layer is at least 50mm (5cm) deep and the gravel surface is spread across the surface. Simply rake over the entire area to help distribute the gravel evenly.

Leveling and Compacting the Gravel

Spread 4 to 6 inches of dense graded base gravel across the area, using a rake to roughly level it out. Use a hand tamper to start compacting the gravel. Make repeated passes across the area, tamping down about 2 to 3 inches at a time before adding more gravel.

As a general guide, one ton of gravel typically covers approximately: 100 square feet at a 2-inch depth. 80 square feet at a 3-inch depth. 60 square feet at a 4-inch depth.

To spread the fresh layer of gravel evenly and effectively requires a tractor with a box blade or grading scraper attachment. The new gravel should be worked toward the center to establish a crown -- a high point that runs lengthwise down the center of the drive -- for proper drainage.

In contrast to A gravel, the rocks in B gravel only have to pass through a 150 mm sieve, which means this gravel is a lot coarser in texture. Both A and B gravel include not just stone, but also things like clay and sand, in their mixes, which affects which applications they are best for.

This material is made from blasted rock, crushed to 1”, so it has sharp or square edges. Generally it's used for driveways or walkways. This compacts well and becomes a very clean blue/grey colour once washed by rain.

Is a box blade good for gravel driveway? ›

Wheel loaders: Unlike backhoes, wheel loaders don't have an excavating arm for digging. They're used to scoop and move heavy loads in the bucket attached to the front of the machine. They are useful for removing large amounts of material from dig sites, loading gravel or cleaning up jobsites.

Transfer shovels have curved edges and a square bowl. They work best digging into and carrying gravel, concrete or heavy materials.

Rake. If you want to know how to keep a gravel driveway clean, you'll want to invest in a good rake. A heavy-duty rake made for gravel will allow you to sift the gravel and filter out the debris that so commonly builds up in loose gravel.

Shovel the rocks into wheelbarrow,, push, dump, repeat. Not bad at all with a couple of people shoveling. If a truck can back up to the site, best choice is to have it delivered in place with a dump truck and then spread it out which you were going to need to do anyway.
