A Japanese fruit sandwich is also called a “fruit sando,” and they originated in Japan. The exact timing and place are a bit unclear, but this delicate sandwich idea may have been around in Tokyo since the 1920s or even earlier. Either way, fruit sando is now popular worldwide, and with good reason!

The word “sando” is short for sandwich. In Japan, fruit sandos are found in hip patisseries as well as at corner convenience stores, wrapped in clear plastic to reveal the delicate layers. you can find this in local supermarkets such as 7-Eleven in Japan.

It’s filled with fresh whipped cream and sandwiched between two layers of soft, fluffy milk bread, also known asshokupanin Japan. The crust is usually cut off and the sandwich is cut in half to reveal the fruit and cream filling. And while it may sound heavy, it’s actually quite refreshing. Both the milk bread and whipped cream are airy and light so the fruit really shines, colorful and of course pretty!

What do you need to Make a Japanese Fruit Sandwich?

  • Bread; use Japanese shokupan if you can find it. This sandwich requires resting in the fridge for a couple of hours. Japanese shokupan will not get dry easily in the fridge. Also, Shokupan has a touch of sweetness to it already and adds a soft fluffy element to the sandwich. Here, I use white bread with a soft sliced texture, since I can’t find any shokupan here you can also use fluffy white sandwich bread that is thick in width; however, there may be slight taste differences.
  • Sweetened Whipping Cream; I use instant sweetened whipping cream. I recommend you to use full fat and avoid the light ones. You don’t need additional sugar if you’re using sweetened already. Cream with a high ratio of butterfat works best for Fruit Sandwiches because the juicy fruit inside waters down the cream
  • Fruit. I use Strawberry and Kiwi. Strawberry contains less water, moreover Strawberries and cream are a classic combo that works so well together. meanwhile, the kiwi has a sturdy interesting cut surface. For other fruit options, you can use oranges and grapes. The fillings are versatile so you can use whatever your favorite fruits are or use seasonal fruits and bananas.

The possibilities here are pretty endless. When choosing fruit for Fruit Sandwiches, there are some qualities you want to look for:

  1. Ripe fruit – The most important thing is that you’re using ripe fruit, but not over-riped because it will change the flavor. which is both sweet and flavorful. This is why the fruit used in these sandwiches usually changes with the seasons.
  2. Vibrant colors – While this isn’t usually a problem, as most ripe fruits are also colorful, you’ll want to think about the color palette of your sandwich as you pick the fruit out.Pretty things always catch some attention, right?
  3. Not too juicy – while citrus fruit like oranges and grapefruit can becolorful and a nice option to add to a fruit sandwich. They are so watery that they need to eat right away or the cream will start to dissolve.
  4. For best results, use fresh fruit that’s in season and firm enough to hold its shape. Strawberries, mangos, oranges, kiwis, blueberries, or peaches make great fruit alternatives. Mix and match with your Preference
